I went to a friends house and he turned the t.v. on to one of the games that was being played that night. It was Oregon State - Stanford playing. My first thought to mind was, who in the hell decided to play a conference game as it's opener? Conference games are usually played on the 3rd game into the season. Everyone knows how dangerous it is to open your game against another team from the same conference.
Any who, I am going to be straight to the point, and I am not looking to offend anyone. This is just my opinion from the one game that I saw of Oregon State.
Oregon State was maybe on the 4 yard line, (up to this point I wasn't aware of all the new rules the NCAA had set for this season) the played started, it was obviously an attempt to be a simple quick pass to the HB out in the flats. What I thought would have been a good play turned out to be a terrible play and a terrible call by the coach. Once the announcer had explained the rules, my first thought was "What the f*ck was this coach thinking, to call a play like that so close to his endzone" on what I believe was 2nd down.
The quarter back had tried to throw a quick pass to the half-back, only to throw it slightly behind him. Thus making it a live ball, well turns out this ball bounced into the endzone and out of the endzone, making it a safety. This one play turned the tide of the game. Not only did they give up two points, but they also had to kick off to Stanford now. Stanford would score on that series.
For that I blame that game entirely on the coach. He let his players down by in my opinion not being aware of the new rules. Even if he was aware of the new rules, what the hell was he thinking to be calling such a play.
It also doesn't help that the quarterback threw two interceptions. One he could not help since the pass was deflected. The other interception he did throw went back for a touchdown. That play he could have been smarter on and could have been prevented if he had just waited one more second to see the linebacker ghosting him.
This is why you do not play conference games as your first game. Stanford is a good team, but I felt Oregon State should have won that game. I am hoping that Oregon State will turn things around so I don't look like a complete fool when the season comes to an end.
you've got to kind of expect that from OSU. very slow starters. I can expect them to pick it up by mid season.
